The Left on FDI

This refers to the story, "Karat: Ready to discuss opening up FDI in retail", (Business Line, October 22).

While the apprehension that foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail may lead to displacement of employment is justifiable, the party's stand that the public sector need not be run as government departments is quite laudable.

It is clear that while the party is against the divestment in the navaratnas, it is not against infusion of private participation in some of the PSUs on a need-based manner.

Mr Karat has made a clear point through the statement that the Central Government could adopt the West Bengal model on PSU reforms.

The West Bengal Chief Minister's stand that strikes in the IT sector should be avoided as far as possible shows his intention to attract private participation for the well being of the State through generation of employment opportunities. All these developments hint a major shift in the political strategy of the party.

Mr Karat deserves full appreciation in making a very valid and bold observation that nomination of politicians to PSU boards is a bad idea.

Those nominated to PSU boards should be qualified for the job.

The Government should come forward for fruitful discussions in the matters raised by Mr Karat in the larger interest of the country and the labour force.
