Salaries at NTPC

This is with reference to the news item, "It pays to be a school drop out in NTPC", (Business Line, October 18).

It is mentioned that Mr Safal Ram, a helper, is paid Rs 8,98,369 a year, while, Mr S. S. Chakravarthy, CEO of a unit, with 36 years of experience has an annual income of Rs 8,79,658, about Rs 19,000 less than the helper.

Every job is normally evaluated taking into account academic considerations, experience, responsibility involved and so on.

At the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), such logic seems to have been ignored. NTPC must be spending a huge amount on its wage bill.

No wonder the PSU is running under loss.
