Three more airports wi-fi enabled in TN

Coimbatore , Oct. 24

AIR travellers passing through the airports of Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi can log on to the Internet with their laptops, as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has made these airports wi-fi (wireless fidelity) enabled.

A wi-fi facility enables laptops or personal digital assistants (PDAs) to be connected with the local area network.

The Chennai airport is already wi-fi enabled.

Though the facility is free for now at the airports, BSNL is working on a specific tariff package for wi-fi connectivity.

The Union Minister of Communication and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, formally inaugurated the simultaneous launch of the wi-fi service for the three airports at a function in Madurai.

BSNL has extended the facility at Coimbatore airport by way of a gateway switch with three access points — the arrival hall, the passenger lounge and the conference room.

Speaking on the occasion, the Principal General Manager, BSNL, Coimbatore telecom district, Mr A.S. Egaya, said BSNL is contemplating having minimum four hot spots (a geographical region with one or several access points for wi-fi connectivity) in the city soon.

The three other wi-fi spots are to be shortly identified based on the needs and the scope of usage. (A gateway switch with an access point costs about Rs 50,000).

Mr Vijay Kumar, Airport Director, Coimbatore, said that the extension of the new facility would upgrade the airport's amenities and would be useful for travellers in the event of flight delays. With the wi-fi facility in place at the Chennai and Kolkata airports, BSNL plans to have 300 hot spots across the country.

Wi-fi equipment will be installed in Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Pune and the satellite towns of Mumbai.
