AP fishermen to stage protest on Nov 21

Visakhapatnam , Oct. 24

TRADITIONAL fishermen in the State are planning to voice their protest against the Government policies at four places along the coast - Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam - on November 21, the World Fisheries Day.

At the conclusion of a three-day convention of traditional fishermen here on Monday, Mr Harikrishna Debnath, general secretary of the Traditional Fish Workers' Union, and other office-bearers said the proposal to bring in foreign vessels under the guise of Indian ownership to exploit the marine wealth in the exclusive economic zone was quite reprehensible.

In the past, traditional fishermen had opposed joint ventures and chartering vessels from abroad and the Government had resorted to the new move, which was equally detrimental to the interests of the one crore marine fisherfolk in the country, they said.

Mr Debnath urged the State Government to implement a pension scheme for fishermen.
