`Plan 140' helps Coimbatore BSNL post growth

Coimbatore , Oct. 25

COIMBATORE has managed to reverse the negative growth seen in BSNL basic telephone lines till last year.

The public sector telephone provider has recorded positive growth this year in the district, thanks to the introduction of the `Plan 140' services.

`The introduction of `Plan 140' landline connections, a lower tariff package scheme, has helped us increasing the number of working lines this year and, thereby, achieving positive growth in a number of new connections', said Mr A.S. Egaya, Principal General Manager, BSNL Coimbatore telecom.

The district has recorded a net additional 10,000 telephone lines up to September.

BSNL Coimbatore has chalked up plans, according to Mr Egaya, to commission 12 base trans-receiving stations (BTS) by next month to roll out the wireless local loop (WLL) telephony.

The commissioning of the 12 BTS each to cover a radial distance of 10 to 15 km would enable it to provide 11,000 phone connections. Efforts are on to get another WLL switch by next month, which would enable the telecom to have 36 BTS erected to cover the entire telecom district under WLL.
