Damage control

Visakhapatnam airport has been closed for the last eleven days as it has gone under water after two releases from the Mehadrigadda reservoir, nearby. One wonders why this kind of contingency was not foreseen in the planning, approval and execution of either of these projects?

Massive inundation of this major airport for so many days testifies once more to the governments in this country not being proactive at all. Instead, they are accustomed to act only after a long lasting problem turns into a major crisis. Continued collapse of old buildings in Mumbai, millions of road encroachments of all kinds in major cities, exploding population growth, the numerous accidents due to drunken driving and other serious problems are bound to get out of hand sooner or later if not checked.

It is high time governments got proactive and paid more attention to development and infrastructure issues.
