An environment hazard

While media reports abound of India emerging as a top destination for production of chemicals, leather, textiles, pesticides and the like, it is sad that this achievement is at the cost of a clean and healthy environment.

For instance, the air monitors in Cuddalore have the air pollution to be 5,000 to 20,000 times more than the levels permitted by the USEPA (US Environmental Standards)

Similarly, sponge iron is a notorious polluter. Though it brings in lakhs of rupees in profit, it is at the cost of severe damage to the environment.

Wherever they come up, sponge iron units face huge protests from the local people.

And for no small reason, they have hazardous effects on agricultural crops.
