THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has directed the officials to take measures to ensure that inundation of Visakhapatnam Airport does not recur.

According to an official release, the Chief Minister asked a team consisting of engineers of irrigation department, the district collector and the municipal commissioner to study in detail and find out ways to contain the flooding of airport.

The Visakhapatnam Airport is not in operation due to inundation for the past 15 days. Expressing concern over the serious situation prevailing at the airport, the Chief Minister directed the irrigation department to take up the works of widening the channels of both Meghadrigedda reservoir and the Kondagedda and arrest flooding of the airport.

Taking into consideration the importance of Visakhapatnam as a fast developing industrial city as well as its strategic location at the seashore, the Chief Minister also directed the officials to revive the proposal of establishing a new International Airport near Visakhapatnam.
