MR R. Seshasayee, Vice-President, Confederation of Indian Industry and Managing Director, Ashok Leyland Ltd, today cautioned the Indian automotive industry against ending up on the wrong side of the emerging "hydrogen divide."
Speaking at the valedictory function of the `International Mobility Engineering Congress & Exposition', which is an event to showcase India's technology in the automotive field held by SAE India, Mr Seshasayee observed that hydrogen powered vehicles could well rule the market in the coming years.
He said that the Indian automotive industry should familiarise itself with hydrogen technology and should try to gain leadership position in at least some aspects of it.
Recycling: Mr Seshasayee also wanted the industry to look at recycling material, which would not only bring down costs but also mitigate the problem of waste disposal. He recalled an instance years ago, when as an executive of Unilever, he had organised a contest for coming up with the highest number of uses for the Dalda tin. The winning entry had come up with 123 uses.
Noting that recycling material was a part of the Indian psyche, he said the industry should take the task of recycling upon itself, and not wait for any legislation to force it to do so.
Safety: Mr Seshasayee further observed that when it came to "safety", the Indian automotive industry concerned itself only with the safety of the driver and the passengers and not of the people outside the vehicle.
He pointed out that more than half of the 70,000-odd fatal road accidents happened to pedestrians and cyclists, unlike in Europe, where it was only 15 per cent. He wanted the industry to take a relook at the safety aspect.
