Shippers want third shift at Kochi port CFS

Our Bureau

Kochi , Oct. 27

THE non-introduction of three-shift operations at the container freight station (CFS) of the Kochi port is causing lot of hardships to shippers as they face difficulties in stuffing the cargo before the cut-off time.

The absence of a third shift has also resulted in the piling up of containers at the CFS, which could result in missing the first available vessels for exports.

The shippers alleged that in spite of repeated requests the port authorities have not made any serious effort to introduce 24-hour operations at the CFS.

The arrival of containers had increased considerably in recent times and the port could easily introduce 24-hour operations at the CFS for the benefit of the trade. The shippers pointed out that the CFS is working on a two-shift operation since its inception four years ago.

They had also raised the issue at the Board of Trustees meeting and the port officials had agreed to examine the issue in consultation with the steamer agents as well as the Customs House Agents and report the matter soon to the Board for further consideration. However, the port officials were of the view that there was hardly sufficient workload to justify three shifts at the CFS.
