Credit through post-offices

The editorial "Post-offices makeover" (Business Line, October 27) has pointed out the difficulties and requirements for converting post-offices into full-fledged banks.

As you have said these may not be impossible conditions to comply with. Post-offices have the largest network covering the entire country. They have better contact with people and they know well the financial conditions of the rural areas and their requirements.

Already they are operating Savings Bank accounts and several post-offices are using computers.

The infrastructure should be built up for all post-offices. Allowing them to disburse credit in the rural areas may be a boon to the farmers.

In due course, several new schemes could also be evolved. There should be proper controls and communication mechanism.
