Poultry Packaging material shortage hurts Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Oct. 28 SHORTAGE of paper trays used to stack eggs meant for export has slowed down the momentum of its shipments, especially from Namakkal. The short supply of egg trays from suppliers of paper-pulp trays had been so acute for the past one month that the export packing of eggs has virtually been crippled, according to Dr P Selvaraj, Chairman of the Namakkal zone's National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC). The exports trade sources bulk of the paper tray from paper pulp manufacturing companies in Andhra Pradesh. Supplies have been hit by the continuous rains there. "As against the average daily shipment of around 25/27 lakh eggs, the export volume has fallen to less than 15 lakh eggs in the past three weeks due to non-availability of paper trays," said Dr Selvaraj. The trade uses 750 to 1,000 bundles of paper trays (each bundle has 100 trays and one tray can carry 30 eggs) every day to pack the eggs to be transported by containers for the port. Due to the slowdown in exports egg prices have tumbled to Rs 1.20 a piece from 1.50 during the same period a year ago.
