Bangalore , Oct. 28

VICTORIA, the south eastern province of Australia, on Friday opened its first trade office in India here aiming to consolidate its growing economic ties offering transfer of high-end of technology in food processing packaging and mining technology.

The office was inaugurated by the Victorian Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Ms Marsha Thomson.

This reinforces the Victorian Government's recognition of India as a significant and major trading partner of Australia and in particular, the State of Victoria.

The trade office is the eleventh international establishment set up by the State, whose contribution accounts for 25 per cent of Australia's GDP.

The trade office would focus mainly on promoting two-way business promotion, said Ms Thomson adding that choosing Bangalore as the venue would help in consolidating the two States' synergies in the information technology and aerospace for expanding the business prospects between the two countries.

Mr P.G.R. Sindhia, Karnataka Minister for Industries, said Karnataka expected to gain from the superior technology of Victoria, while Bangalore's pre-eminent position in IT should also further strengthen the economic ties with the Australian province.

Mr Wayne Lewis, who will head the Victorian Trade office, said that his objective would be to leverage the advantages of Karnataka's technology strength to provide Victoria's expertise in areas of high technology for food packaging, IT support for mining sector and telecom sector.
