The Hindu Business Line : Most manufacturing units in Chennai resume operations

WITH Chennai experiencing clear and sunny weather on Friday, after almost two days of incessant rains, most manufacturing units reported normal operations.

Hyundai Motor India, which closed its assembly line after the first shift yesterday, resumed operations today from the second shift. The company closed its plant following heavy rains and also because supply of components from some of its vendors was hit. Ford India remained closed for the day.

However, the Ambattur industrial estate continued to be affected with water stagnating in the streets and within the units. Power supply has also not yet been restored fully.

Mr K.P. Shashidar Rao, President, Ambattur Industrial Manufacturers' Association, said the Ambattur lake has overflowed and except for the main road, all other streets in the estate were flooded. More than 90 per cent of the medium and small-scale industries of the 2,000 units in the estate had suffered damage.

At the Guindy industrial estate, in the southern part of the city, water-logging has reduced and the situation is more or less normal, according to Mr T.V. Hariharane, President, Chennai District Small-Scale Industries Association.
