Letters The post-office bank
The editorial `Post-office makeover' (Business Line, October 27) brings out the inefficiencies of the postal department. It is small wonder then that private courier companies have stolen a march over the postal department. However, before branching out in banking and similar activities, I suggest that they try to improve the efficiency of their core activity, which is to collect and deliver mails within reasonable time. C. V. K. Moorthy Kolkata * * * The editorial `Post-office makeover' (Business Line, October 27) suggests the setting up of the post office bank to help resuscitate the postal department. But the present post-office culture needs to change before the department ventures into activities such as banking. For starters, it can try serving customers with a little respect, since the consumer isn't really king where postal officials are concerned.
And instead of finding ways to help its customers, the post-office often exhibits its adeptness in discovering rules as to what should be denied to them. Unless this mindset changes and the post-office adopts a commercial outlook, we cannot hope to see any improvement. S. Krishnamoorthy
