Fishermen mend their net in Blangad beach in Thrissur district. A proliferation of the non-edible puffer fish (locally called `kadalmakri') along the Kerala coast, especially between Ernakulam and Thrissur, is causing alarm among the fishing community. These fish, a toxic deep-sea species, swarm the nets in large numbers, damage the fishing gear and even lacerate other fish in the net. Fisheries scientists attribute the unusually large presence of puffer fish to the formation of a vertical current in the sea in the post-monsoon period while the fishermen believe that it has something to do with last year's tsunami.
