Hyderabad , Oct 30

ANDHRA Pradesh has sought an interim assistance of Rs 800 crore from the Centre towards relief and rehabilitation measures, following the extensive damage to crops and property due to recent heavy rains and subsequent floods.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the assistance should be given on an ad hoc basis, pending a decision on the detailed report already submitted by the State Government.

In the detailed report on the loss caused by the heavy rains and floods to crops and property during the past two months, the State had sought Central assistance of Rs 2,400 crore. It put the estimated loss at Rs 2,600 crore.

The CM who reviewed the relief operations in the affected areas through a tele-conference with senior officials, before leaving for Prakasam and Nellore, the worst effected districts this time around, said an action plan should be drawn up for disaster management.

The officials explained that the Government had already spent over Rs 550 crore so far this year to meet the crises arising out of natural disasters, an official press release said here today.
