Rlys, AP Govt point fingers at each other

Hyderabad , Oct. 31

BOTH the South Central Railways (SCR) and the Andhra Pradesh Government have refused to take the blame for the train accident in Nalgonda district that left 114 people killed.

While the SCR claimed that the Irrigation Department officials had not warned them in advance about the vulnerability of the tank at Golnepalli, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, the Major Irrigation Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has termed the argument "absurd."

"They warn them about the vulnerable tanks regularly. But in this particular instance, we did not receive any warning," the in-charge General Manager of SCR, Mr Thomas Varghese, said.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he felt that the State Government might not be aware of the breach. Mr Lakshmaiah mooted a joint inspection by the officials of the State and Railways and said they concluded that no repairs were needed.

Reiterating that there was no mistake from the State's side, the Minister alleged that the department was not consulted by the Railway officials while designing the culvert near the tank. While the culvert was designed to handle 2,066 cusecs, the inflows on Saturday were to the tune of 51,187 cusecs.

The SCR General Manager also denied the allegation that the patrolman, Mr Bandaiah, on duty at Golnepalli village, failed to alert the officials about the gushing waters. "He was washed away in the flood waters only to be rescued in the downstream. He sustained injuries," Mr Varghese said. The General Manager said that the bridge seemed to have been washed away between 1.00 a.m. to 3.00 a.m.

On the restoration works, he said the railway staff could put in place a temporary bridge in 10 days.
