THE trade bodies and the chambers of commerce and industry in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu - that are opposing the payment of service tax by consignors and consignees for taxable service provided by the goods transport agencies - are planning to come out with an action plan against the tax.
A press release by the President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said here on Wednesday that a meeting to discuss the problems of traders in this regard will be held under the leadership of Mr S. Babu, President of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, in Mangalore on November 5.
Mr Rao said that most of the trade bodies from the four States had confirmed their participation.
Out of the 78 services listed by the Government, `transport of goods by road' is the only service where the service receiver has been made responsible for payment of tax. Traders are the major service receivers.
The meeting will suggest suitable measures to persuade the Centre to withdraw the levy of service tax on consignors and consignees using road transport system.
If necessary, legal remedies will be decided at the meeting to defend the traders against the actions of the Central Excise Department, he added.
