THE Indian Media Group has suggested to the Government that after a notified date all foreign channels should be delivered through an addressable system (set top box). This has been suggested to create the much-needed capacity in the cable networks for carriage of Indian licensed channels.

The Group has suggested this as the cable networks, which are mainly analogue, do not have the capacity to carry more than 65 channels, whereas over 175 channels are available now. Of these, about 100 channels are of Indian origin, which do not have access to the distribution platform.

The Group has also welcomed the recent Cabinet decision on the uplinking and downlinking guidelines. The downlinking guidelines will create a level-playing field for domestic and foreign broadcasters as it would also bring the latter within the purview of Indian law and regulations.
