A vendor displaying a live crab at a market in Kerala's Thrissur city. Demand for live crabs from the country has shot up with Far-Eastern countries such as Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia buying them. Live crab exports totalled 1,749 tonnes worth Rs 35.12 crore during 2004-05 fiscal against 1,599 tonnes valued at Rs 30.56 crore the previous year. Sensing the potential, some of the big players in the fish breeding sector have set up hatcheries in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
