Railways RITES likely to work on Dubai project Mamuni Das
New Delhi , Nov. 3 RITES, the consulting arm of Indian Railways, may get a part of the nearly $3.5-billion Dubai Metro Rail System tender awarded to Mitsubishi. Also, having worked on a project providing procurement services in Afghanistan, RITES is likely to bag more such projects there. The RITES Managing Director, Mr V.K. Agarwal, told Business Line that: "Mitsubishi is talking to us through Atkins for sub-contracting some portion of the work of the Dubai Metro Rail System. We may be required to provide railway experts and project management services." A Japanese-Turkish consortium of five companies, headed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), recently signed a contract with the Dubai Municipality, to build a high-tech driverless railway across the emirate. The project, known as the Dubai Metro Project, would have a length of 69.7 km. When completed, the Metro Transit System is expected to be the world's longest driverless railway system. MHI, together with Mitsubishi Corporation, is understood to supply a whole transit system, including rolling stock, driverless control system, traction power distribution system and track-work. Afghan contracts: On Afghanistan, Mr Agarwal said: "We have got more queries from Afghanistan to provide procurement services." RITES had won a contract through international competitive bidding in Afghanistan to provide procurement facilitation services for the ongoing reconstruction work in the war-ravaged country. The company helped procure equipment for various projects across sectors, including airports, navigation, power plants, communications facilities and pharmaceuticals. RITES won the project from the Afghanistan Reconstruction and Development Services (ARDS), as a part of the World Bank-funded Public Administration and Capacity Building Project. The procurement advice included planning, bid document preparation, inviting and evaluating bids, obtaining clearance from funding agencies, preparing contractual documents, goods inspection, as well as dispute resolution.
