Strategy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Tea Girnar plans foray into TN tea market R.Y. Narayanan
Coimbatore , Nov. 3 THE Girnar group, which has a strong presence in the retail tea market in Maharashtra, is making a foray into Tamil Nadu through direct sales outlets and channel partners. The company finds the Tamil Nadu tea market one of the fastest growing in the country with tea consumption growing by about 5 per cent to 6 per cent. Mr Hemant J. Shah, Director, Girnar Food and Beverages Pvt Ltd, Coimbatore, told Business Line that the group has an annual turnover of about Rs 150 crore. While 60 per cent of it came from exports, the balance was from domestic sales. Tea remained the major product marketed by the company, apart from coffee and other agricultural commodities. Mr Shah said the company had been present in Maharashtra for more than three decades and "almost achieved our targets" there and the current moment was the "right time to expand." He saw huge potential in the Tamil Nadu tea market, which was "rapidly growing." Mr Shah said in Coimbatore, the company was looking to have outlets on important highways like Avanashi road, Tiruchi road, Mettupalayam road apart from Gandhipuram and R.S. Puram areas. . Girnar hopes to cover important cities including Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem and Erode in a phased manner.
