Senior architect of ATI Technologies, Mr Raja Koduri, at the launch of new range of graphics processors in Hyderabad on Thursday. Satish_H.
Hyderabad , Nov. 3 ATI Technologies Inc, the $2-billion supplier of graphics, video and multimedia silicon for PCs and the entertainment industry, has taken graphics to the next level with its range of processors that have breached the 1 Giga Hertz speed. The Senior Architect of ATI Technologies Inc, Mr Raja Koduri, said that the company had developed a new range of graphics processors that far outpace competing products, thereby providing better image quality in different categories and applications. The company also announced what it called `hyper memory chips' that can be bundled in personal computers and laptops. Unlike other graphics processors, which have their own memory, these hyper memory chips function while accessing memory available in the computer or systems, he explained. Referred to as Radeon range, these graphics processors, Mr Koduri announced "are faster than 3 Giga Hertz Pentium 4 processor, by about seven times. While the Intel processor functions at 12 Giga Flops per second, Radeon functions at 83 Giga Flops." Interestingly, what started as a quest for a better graphics experience has ended up with significantly diverse applications. These include physics simulations, medical imaging, speech recognition (computer-intensive), and protein folding studies required for cancer-related research, among a host of others. Mr Koduri said that the company has come up with a new visualisation platform Avivo that is ideal for 3D gaming. Demonstrating a street scene in Boston, he said gaming would now go to the next level. Mr Chris Hook of ATI announced that the company planned to launch a few more processors in November.
India expansion
The Managing Director of ATI Technologies India, Mr Dasaradha R. Gude, said that the India development centre based in Hyderabad is among the important R&D centres for the company, developing solutions for handheld and multimedia applications. The company expects India to emerge as a big market. As a result, it plans the simultaneous launch of its range of products in India. The company expected to add about 100 engineers within 12 months, Mr Gude said.
