Third seed bank at Panne

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: Nagarika Seva Trust — a Dakshina Kannada-based non-government organisation — will open its third seed bank at Panne in Sullia taluk of the district on November 8.

In its efforts to conserve indigenous varieties of seeds, the trust has already set up seed banks at Mittabagilu in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district and at Handady in Udupi district.

A Nagarika Seva Trust press release said here on Friday that a registry of indigenous varieties of seeds in Panne region of Sullia taluk has already been prepared for the formation of the seed bank.

To become self-reliant in agriculture sector it is essential to conserve and propagate indigenous varieties of seeds, as many of the varieties are on the verge of extinction, the release added.
