Asia Pacific PC sales touch 10.9 m in Q3, says IDC — `India posts strongest y-o-y growth in notebooks'

New Delhi , Nov. 4

THE personal computer (PC) market in Asia Pacific totalled 10.9 million units in the third quarter of 2005, representing a sequential growth of 11 per cent and a year-on-year growth of 19 per cent, as China, Korea, and Taiwan exceeded sales expectations.

"The highlight of the third quarter's PC market in Asia was notebooks once again. Notebook shipments for the region grew by 54 per cent year-on-year. Markets such as China, Taiwan, India and Korea contributed much towards the region's growth in notebooks. India recorded the strongest year-on-year growth among the countries at about 167 per cent although this was largely due to its small base in Q3 of 2004," an IDC statement said here.

Other countries also recorded growth in their notebook shipments from the previous quarter, except for Australia and Indonesia.

During the period, market leader Lenovo widened its lead on runner-up HP, as its total PC shipments surged 22 per cent quarter compared to the latter's 14 per cent.

Meanwhile, the rest of the top five PC vendors - Dell, Founder and Acer - recorded robust double-digit growth rates.

"In China, low-cost 64-bit desktop PCs sparked consumer interest. PC vendors there also increasingly targeted small and medium businesses (SMBs), supported by the Chinese Government's own initiatives in encouraging IT use in that segment. "In India, greater notebook buying from tertiary institutions due to falling price points boosted the market," IDC said.

Low-end PCs in Korea continued to fuel consumer replacements in the third quarter, defying what would traditionally be a slow period for the consumer market, even as Australia's total PC shipments posted a sequential drop - in line with its seasonal slowdown in the third quarter.

"The Singapore PC market recorded a slight growth from last quarter, thanks to a gain seen in notebooks which helped to offset the fall in desktop shipments. Notebook sales were particularly strong in the third quarter as fulfilment for tertiary institutions had peaked then," it added.
