Swiss aid agencies to focus more on poverty alleviation

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Nov. 4

SWISS aid agencies are seeking to reorient their assistance to development projects in India, Switzerland's Ambassador to India, Mr Dominique Dreyer, said here on Friday.

"We are currently assessing the situation," Mr Dreyer told reporters on the sidelines of India Organic 2005, even while declining to comment on the specific time frame.

India has been receiving development assistance from Switzerland for the past three-four decades, but now the Swiss agencies are reorienting their strategy in view of the budgetary constraints back home and the Swiss Government's intention to help poorer countries, Mr Dreyer said. However, he did not give specific details.

According to Mr Dreyer the focus of the Swiss aid in future would be more on poverty alleviation initiatives. He expects the annual aid of 30 million Swiss Francs to India to stabilise around the same level going forward.

Earlier, addressing the India Organic-2005, Mr Dreyer said alleviating poverty in India and China should not be considered as national problems of those countries but should be treated as "world problem." "Developed countries should play a big part (in alleviating poverty in India and China)," he added.
