THE Orissa Government on Saturday signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with IIT, Kharagpur and XLRI, Jamshedpur for the development of engineering and management courses in educational institutions under the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).

While IIT will provide support for undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in engineering and allied disciplines, XLRI will try to make BPUT a model technical university for management education.

The Director of IIT, Kharagpur, Prof S.K. Dube, and the Director of XLRI, Father N. Casmir Raj, signed the MoUs with the BPUT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O.N. Mohanty, in the presence of the Chief Minister, Mr. Naveen Patnaik, and the Industry Minister, Mr B.B. Harichandan.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that in view of the industrial development that was taking place in the State, there was a need to improve the quality of education to have quality manpower.

He hoped that the collaboration with IIT, Kharagpur and XLRI, Jamshedpur would help BPUT enhance the quality of technical and management education in the State.

Currently, BPUT has more than 40 engineering colleges, 36 computer application institutes, 20 management institutes, 16 pharmacy institutes, two hotel management institutes and two colleges offering courses in architecture.
