KSEB officials oppose move for outsourcing

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 6

THE Officers' Association of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has warned authorities against proceeding with the plans for outsourcing some of the public utility's works.

A spokesman of the association said here that any move in this direction, which is "in line with the modern-day philosophy of exploiting the working class" would be stoutly resisted. The proposed move for outsourcing routine work is posing a real threat to the job security in KSEB, he added.

Works under some of the Centrally implemented schemes, a slew of training programmes, meter reading, billing and even the day-to-day operation of sub-stations are sought to be handed over to outside agencies on contract basis. Several among these were of a permanent nature, the association contended.

The KSEB has not been appointing regular employees for such works, though it had already set in motion procedures for creating new posts for the emerging sectors of its operation. The association alleged that the board had even sought to hide facts relating to the outsourcing controversy when challenged in the courts.

It recalled that a direction had recently been issued not to create new posts even to handle the operation and maintenance of new sub-stations.
