Events Domestic industry must be globally competitive: Kalam Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 7 THE President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has asked the domestic industry to be globally competitive for India to become the world's knowledge hub. He emphasised on nano technology and its applications and how India could contribute substantially to this world market. The President was speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day summit on `India R&D 2005 - The World's Knowledge Hub of the Future', organised by FICCI in partnership with CSIR, the Departments of Science and Technology and Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India, on Monday. While elaborating on the importance of nano technology, he said the world market in 2004 for nano materials, nano tools, nano devices, and nano biotechnology together was over $100 billion. Referring specifically to the use of nano technology for detecting cancer and other applications, he said, "There is a need for oncologists, pharmacologists, nano science and technologists to work together to make drug and drug delivery through nano technology a reality in a time bound manner." Outlining his vision on key areas of R&D, which will have global implications and also meet the national requirements, the President called for focus on the fight against HIV infection, building a substantial aerospace industry and undertaking mega missions in information technology. On the knowledge connectivity front, the President said, "To make the country the most advanced knowledge society, we should aim at making the bandwidth available without hindrance and at no cost. Making the bandwidth available is like the Government laying the roads. Movement of materials through these roads creates wealth in the industrial economy."
