A `little Japan' in Tamil Nadu — Township for Japanese investors planned

Chennai , Nov. 7

THE Tamil Nadu Government will look into the possibility of setting up a township that would be a home away from home for investors from Japan.

The Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, told an economic mission led by Mr Hirotaro Yamasaki, Mayor of Fukuoka City, Japan, that the Government would look into the possibility of a suitable location for a township that would be a `little Japan'.

Investors from Japan are looking for a township that would address the housing, cultural, educational, entertainment, social and culinary needs of the expatriate community.

The State Government is firmly committed to creating an entire ecosystem to attract investors. This would mean that it would have to look beyond economic and social spheres, she said, according to a copy of her speech that was released to the press.

Tamil Nadu was the first among the States to look at exploiting the opportunity created by the growing partnership between India and Japan. It had sent a delegation comprising industry representatives and senior officials to Japan.

According to an official press release, the 38-member delegation led by Mr Yamasaki, discussed opportunities for trade and investment in Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister said the Government is firmly committed to the partnership. The delegation's visit augurs well for a long-term commitment between India and Japan.

Mr Yamasaki said the delegation recognised that Tamil Nadu is the most attractive State in India for investments. The delegation comprising members mostly from information technology and related industries would take advantage of the potential in the State and promote relations between Fukuoka City and Chennai.
