Volcker Report

This refers to the report "Natwar Singh relieved of External Affairs portfolio" (Business Line November 8). This calls to mind a similar situation in 1962, when people were sore with the then Defence Minister, Krishna Menon.

Sensing the nation's mood, Jawaharlal Nehru divested Menon of his Defence portfolio but he was retained as the Minister of Defence Production.

That did not assuage the public feelings and he had to go out of the Cabinet a few days later. Is the Natwar Singh issue following that pattern?

The manner in which the Government is handling the issue does it little credit.

If the understanding is that Mr Natwar Singh will be reinstated, if found guiltless, he could have been persuaded to go on a sort of leave and the country spared the embarrassment in the way it has handled the issue thus far.
