TDB suspends Ecosmart work on Sabarimala

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 8

THE Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has suspended, till further orders, the consultancy services of Ecosmart, a subsidiary of IL&FS, for the Sabarimala development project.

The TDB President, Mr G. Raman Nair, told newspersons here on Tuesday that this had been done in view of the ongoing controversy over the appointment of Ecosmart.

He said that Ecosmart was appointed as the consultant for the preparation of the master plan for the project on the recommendation of the State Government.

But the controversy arose following a press statement made by a top Ecosmart official that Rs 1,000 crore would be mobilised from the market to implement the project.

Mr Nair said TDB had not taken any decision to implement the project on build-operate-transfer basis.

The consultant was appointed only for preparing the master plan. The official had later apologised for his statement.

Mr Nair also said that TDB had decided to freeze all fresh appointments to the various temples under it.

The decision had been taken on the recommendation of the Government.

He said the move would hamper the working of 1,000-odd temples under TDB during the ensuing Sabarimala pilgrimage season. The Government would be informed of this, he added.
