Airlines SriLankan Airlines aims to be long haul carrier Nina Varghese
Chennai , Nov. 9 SRILANKAN Airlines has reworked its market strategy and has positioned itself as a long haul carrier rather than a point-to-point airline, according to Mr N. Prabaharan, Regional Manager (Sri Lanka and Indian sub-continent), SriLankan Airlines. He said the increase in capacity from India was a challenge and SriLankan Airlines now offers a one-stop passage to any part of the world. Mr Prabaharan said the airline could offer passengers from India the facility of a through check-in from any Indian point to their final destination as well as connections on both East and West-bound sectors. The two external factors that have supported this strategy are the country's visa-on-arrival scheme and the airport expansion. The connecting time between flights would range from one to six hours, he said. The airline is also offering a free stop-over in Colombo. When asked whether there would be reduction infares, Mr Prabaharan said the pricing would depend on market conditions. Mr Mohan de S. Meegolle, Manager -Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, SriLankan Airlines, said though there was a dip in traffic from the West, about 1.10 lakh Indians visited Sri Lanka. The Free Trade Agreement between India and Sri Lanka has contributed to increase in traffic between the two countries, he said. SriLankan Airlines is planning to set up a call centre in India to cater to the Indian market. Mr Prabaharan said the call centre is likely to come up in the South. The airline has also set up a call centre in Sri Lanka. The airline operates an Airbus fleet, which has an average age of about six years. Mr Prabaharan said that the airline operates 85 flights a week to 10 destinations in India. It also operates a freighter on the Coimbatore-Colombo sector.
