Trade & Labour Unions Kakinada barge workers, owners threaten strike Our Bureau
Kakinada , Oct 9 THE cargo boat workers and barge owners at the old anchorage port here have threatened to go on strike from November 15, if the trade does not increase the handling charges. Two rounds of talks have been held so far, but the deadlock could not be broken. The cargo boat workers have demanded a hike of Rs 20 per tonne in handling charges at the old port from the present level of Rs 76. The trade representatives initially offered a hike of Rs 5 per tonne and later increased it to Rs 8, but the workers are not satisfied with it. The workers' union suggested a two-year agreement on handling charges, but no agreement could be reached on the point. The trade representatives said it would not be economical to raise the rates any further. The Deputy Commissioner of Labour, Mr Panduranga Raju, is making reconciliation efforts. Nearly 10,000 workers, mostly hailing from the fishermen community, are dependent on the old anchorage port which handles the traditional agri cargoes reserved for it.
