New Delhi , Nov. 9

AIR India (AI) and its subsidiary, Air India Charters Ltd (AICL), have entered the market to dry-lease up to nine aircraft that could see both the airlines not only increase their existing flights but also add to their global network.

AI plans to choose from five varieties of aircraft including the Boeing 747-400, Boeing 777-200 Extended Range, Boeing 777-200, Boeing 777-300 Extended Range and the Airbus A-330-200.

The airline plans to lease up to six aircraft for a period of three-five years. The airline has indicated that it would consider the Airbus A-330-200 aircraft only if it receives a minimum of three aircraft from one or more of the bidders. The airline has indicated that it would like the aircraft to enter its fleet by September 2006. Except for the Boeing 777-200 aircraft the other aircraft that AI plans to lease will offer passengers seating in first, business and economy class.

AICL that plans to dry-lease three Boeing 737-800 aircraft for five years will offer passengers seating only in economy class.

The airlines plan to lease the aircraft as a stopgap arrangement till the aircraft they will be buying arrive. The combined fleet acquisition proposal of the two airlines to purchase 68 Boeing aircraft at an estimated Rs 35,000 crore is likely to be cleared by the Government shortly. While AI plans to acquire 50 Boeing aircraft, including the B 777 and B 787, AICL plans to acquire 18 B 737-800 aircraft.
