Asian textile conference in New Delhi next month

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 9

THE Asian Textile Conference, ATXCON 2005, will be held in the Capital on December 1-2. Organised by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), the conference will provide Asian countries a platform to discuss and evolve a coordinated strategy for the region's textile industry, to enhance its global market share. This is seen necessary after the phasing out of the quota regime. The conclave will deliberate on issues such as inputs and intermediary products required by the industry to gear up for the future.

With regard to equipment needs, Mr Vinod K. Ladia, former Chairman of CITI, and Chairman, Shree Rajasthan Texchem Ltd, said the Indian textile industry would require 15 million spindles over the next five years. Current domestic production stood at two million spindles per annum; so there was need to import five million additional spindles, he said.

Each Asian country has its core competencies and a roadmap was needed to build on these competencies and ensure adequate market share for each country, he said.
