Govt committed to revival of sick PSUs: Sonia

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 9

THE Congress President and UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, today reiterated the Government's commitment to revive sick public sector companies and said that the Manmohan Singh Government was taking steps to fulfil all its promises to the nation.

"The Government is taking one step after the other to fulfil all the promises made to the country and society with honesty," Ms Gandhi said after inaugurating the second GSM manufacturing facility of ITI Ltd in Rae Bareli, according to agency reports.

The project would provide work to all the 4,150 employees of the unit. Ms Gandhi said that the Rae Bareli unit once bulk produced cross bar equipment for fixed telephone lines, but when the technology became obsolete, it faced the possibility of being liquidated by the previous NDA government. She said PSUs that can run would be revived and revamping of ITI was part of the commitment.

The Government was worried about the unemployment issue and thus brought the National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill, she said, adding that the programme would be started in 200 districts and would be expanded to cover the entire country.

She said the measures taken by late Prime Minister Mr Rajiv Gandhi in the field of communication technology had started showing results in every field.
