Labour Reforms AP: Construction workers' Act may be amended Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Nov 10 THE State Government is contemplating amendments to the A.P. Building and Other Construction Workers' Act, 1996. At a press meet here on Thursday, the member of the State Labour Advisory Board, Mr B. Gangadhara Rao, said the issue came up for discussion at the first meeting of the board held in the Secretariat last week. The number of workers in the construction sector had increased in the recent past due to the taking up of several irrigation projects under "Jala Yagnam" by the Government, it was noted. "There is no specific law for construction labour in the State and the Central law is being followed. "This Act would be beneficial only in places where 50 or more workers are engaged. "In house building activity, we find not more than 10 workers at the site. Therefore, we propose to amend the law," he said. "There is another proposal to bring all the National Child Labour projects under the administrative control of the Labour Department so as to appoint Assistant Commissioners of Labour as project directors for better coordination between the Inspectorate and rehabilitation for effective eradication of child labour," he said. The State Government was also keen on bringing an umbrella legislation to provide social security to all the unorganised workers and to strengthen the Labour department at the field level for effective implementation of labour laws, he added.
