Economy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Commodities Inflation rises on firm vegetable prices Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 11 THE annual wholesale price index-based inflation rose 4.75 per cent during the week ending October 29, higher than the previous week's 4.49 per cent. The surge in the year-on-year inflation rate was largely on account of an increase in prices of vegetables and some manufactured products, according to data released here on Friday by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The wholesale price index stood at 198.3 points during the latest reported week, against 189.3 points a year ago. The index was at 197.7 points a week ago. Inflation grew 6.95 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year. On a disaggregated basis, the primary articles' group index was up 1.3 per cent over last week's levels at 199.3 points due to costlier food and non-food items. The index was at 192.8 points a year ago. The fuel, power, light and lubricants group index was down 0.7 per cent to 312.4 points due to two per cent fall in electricity prices. The index was 282.4 points in the year-ago period. The manufactured products' group index fell marginally by 0.3 per cent to 172.5 points as prices rose for food products, chemicals, metals and machinery. It was 167.3 points a year ago. Among the primary articles' group, the food articles' group index rose 1.8 per cent to 201.5 points due to higher prices of vegetables (16.4 per cent), pork (eight per cent), urad, gram, bajra and fruits (one per cent each). The non-food articles group index was up 0.3 per cent to 182.2 points due to higher prices of mesta (11 per cent), tobacco (two per cent) and groundnut seed, raw jute, raw cotton and safflower (one per cent each). However, prices declined for coir fibre (three per cent) and soyabean and castor seed (one per cent each). Among the manufactured products' group, the food products' group index was up 0.2 per cent to 178.3 points owing to rise in the prices of bran and sooji (three per cent) and atta and maida (one per cent each). The chemicals and chemical products' group index rose 0.9 per cent to 189.5 points due to higher prices of tablets, except vitamin and penicillin (seven per cent), ointments (four per cent), ayurvedic medicine liquids (three per cent) and bopp film, acid and soda ash (one per cent each), but caustic soda turned cheaper by two per cent. The Government also revised upward inflation figure to 3.64 per cent for the week ended September 3, up from the provisional 3.16 per cent. The WPI stood corrected at 196.6 points as against the earlier estimate of 195.7 points.
