S. Africa seeks Indian expertise in IT, ITES

Chennai , Nov. 12

THE Indian business sector can use the South African market as a springboard to reach African markets, according to Mr Radhakrishna Padayachi, Deputy Minister for Communication, Republic of South Africa.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, Mr Padayachi said the strong cultural ties between South Africa, more particularly Durban, and South India could be a platform on which trade between the two regions can flourish.

He said India should bring its expertise to South Africa, particularly in the IT and ITES sectors, and in the field of communication. He said Tata Africa had a 26 per cent stake in the second network operator in South Africa, and added that Indian businessmen could provide indigenous solutions to indigenous problems in South Africa because of the similarities in conditions in the two nations.

Mr Padayachi said there had been some talk of opening a trade office in Chennai that would facilitate trade between the two nations. A proposal has been raised to have a twinning city agreement between Chennai and Ethikwini, a municipal area in the city of Durban. The agreement would facilitate cultural and commercial ties between the two areas, he added.
