THE Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, has urged Corporation Bank to open more branches in semi-urban and rural areas of Maharashtra.

A bank release said here on Saturday that Mr Deshmukh was speaking at a musical evening organised by the bank in Mumbai recently to commemorate its centenary celebrations.

Terming Corporation Bank as an investor-friendly bank, he said the bank should open more number of branches in semi-urban and rural areas of Maharashtra. This would help create employment opportunities to the youth, he said.

Mr Deshmukh lauded the spontaneous response of the bank to the call of the State for assistance during the recent deluge in Mumbai. The bank has donated Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, the release said.

Earlier, Mr V.K. Chopra, Chairman and Managing Director of the bank, said that the bank has identified education as a thrust area for launching some of developmental activities during the centenary year.

The bank has announced a scheme of providing scholarship to 100 meritorious students in 25 select villages during the year.

The bank is also setting up libraries in these identified villages.

He said that the bank is constructing a modern library and numismatic museum at its headquarters in Mangalore. The building, which has been designed with a view to give easy access to the physically challenged people, will be dedicated to the citizens of Mangalore, he added.

The release said that Corporation Bank's centenary celebration would culminate on March 12.
