Cultivating business

This is with reference to the article "For a win-win business plan" in the vision 2020 series (Business Line, November 14). There are two problems associated with the acquisition of agricultural land for industry.

First, the demand that the industrial unit or units which use the land must provide jobs to the displaced `sons of the soil' is often overwhelming and although it is not altogether unjust, it is not always possible to accommodate many `sons'.

Second, we have still not thought of an alternative policy to bring under cultivation thousands of acres of waste or barren land.

If necessary, the price payable for the acquired (cultivable) land can be enhanced to include a suitable component of cost to be incurred for bringing under cultivation equivalent acreage of barren land.
