Beedi leaf collectors to get income share

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov.14

THE State Government has taken the initiative to distribute the net income obtained from beedi leaf collection among the leaf collectors from the next season.

Each family will get a bonus apart from the wages it earned on beedi leaf collection. The Government gets revenue in the range of Rs 7-10 crore every year, depending on the market rate, quantity and quality of beedi leaf collected.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, Mr S. Vijayarama Raju, Minister for Forests, Environment, Science and Technology, said about 1.37 lakh families, mostly in tribal areas, would be benefited. Each family, which earned Rs 4,500 in the form of wages, would get a bonus of Rs 700.

The Ministry of Forests will strengthen the wage card system to disburse the bonus effectively. The wage cards contain all the details and number of leaf units collected by individual collectors

While helping in the development of interior areas, the policy initiative is expected to increase overall beedi leaf collections, the Minister said.

There are 325 beedi leaf units in ten districts of the Telangana region, with a production capacity of seven lakh standard bags. Each bag consists of 1,000 units of 50-leaf packets.

The pruning of the beedi leaf is done during February-March and the leaf is collected during April-May. The State Government has collected the produce from the collectors by paying wages (59 paise a 50-leaf packet) and has handed the green leaf to the purchasers.
