Govt may make clinical research part of medical college curriculum

New Delhi , Nov. 15

THE Government plans to make clinical research part of the course structure at medical schools in the next five years. This was stated by Dr M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology.

He was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day `Bio-Business Summit 2005 — Global Clinical Trials in India: Challenges and Opportunities,' organised on Monday by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

He pointed out that it was necessary to have human resource creation strategies for clinical research in India and a proper assessment of the training needs for researchers. Dr Bhan said that ICMR and the Ministry of Science and Technology would also overhaul the medical school research system to produce skilled, motivated and ethical professionals in biotechnology research.

The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, said that good clinical practices, while conducting trials, have to be a shared responsibility of sponsors, clinical investigators, ethics committees and regulatory bodies.

"As our share in global clinical research increases, the challenges would have to be met along with the opportunities thrown up by this intellectual activity.

"The need of the hour is to identify the deficiencies and prepare for the challenges much in advance and to address them in a speedy and effective manner," she said.
