CII seeks tax holiday for food processing

Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 15

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Committee on Food Processing has urged the Finance Ministry to give a complete tax holiday for the food processing sector.

Mr Piruz Khambatta, Chairman, CII Committee on Food Processing, said processed food had to be made available at a reasonable price. One of the factors that increased the price of processed food is the cascading effect of tax.

CII has also called a complete switchover to VAT. He said this industry could create more employment.

Mr Khambatta said the food processing industry should be given the same opportunities that helped the Information Technology industry to grow.

The number of intermediaries in supply chain had to be brought down and organised retail had to be encouraged, he said.

This would create better price value not just for the manufacturer but also for the end customer.

This will increase the affordability of the processed food in the market.

The committee has also recommended that infrastructure projects be given a five-year income tax holiday. This would be for new projects for processed foods with value addition.

The other recommendations are that small and medium enterprises be helped in brand building. Indian brands have to start competing in the international market, he said.
