Delhi Govt priority for rainwater harvesting

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 15

ACCORDING high priority to rainwater harvesting, the Delhi Government on Tuesday said it had made it mandatory for all new buildings taller than 100 mtrs to have facilities for rainwater harvesting.

Recharging the groundwater through rainwater harvesting is already a priority for Delhi, said Dr A.K. Walia, Minister for Finance, Urban Planning in the Delhi State Government. Instructions have been given to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that all new buildings taller than 100 mtrs should have facilities for rainwater harvesting, he stated at a conference on rainwater harvesting organised by Action for Food Production (AFPRO), a non-governmental organisation.

"Delhi needs groundwater replenishment on an urgent basis as a lot of water gets drawn through tube wells. Therefore, a lot needs to be done for conservation, recycling and water harvesting," he said.

There are three lakh tubewells in Delhi that draw out nearly 180 million gallons per day (mgd), according to Central Groundwater Department, according to a release. This is nearly 12 per cent of the total supply and demand goes on increasing as nearly half a million people are added to Delhi's population per year. Delhi needs 850 mgd while the present supply amounts to 670 mgd, he said.
