Agarwals see red over Service Tax ad

Hyderabad , Nov 15

THE Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has assured the leaders of Agarwal community that he will look into their plea on, what they termed, derogatory comment on the community in a recent Government advertisement.

The assurance came when a group of Agarwal Samaj leaders met him at the Lake View Guest House here on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum protesting against the advertisement.

The advertisement on Service Tax referred to a `Gupta uncle' who was synonymous with evading tax.

"A particular community could not be attributed for the practice of tax evasion. In fact, the community that is mentioned in the advertisement is contributing maximum amount of taxes to the exchequer," Mr Ram Nivas Gupta, President of Agarwal Samaj (Andhra Pradesh), told Business Line.

The advertisement, which was also aired in television channels, was aimed at tarnishing the image of the community, he said.

Asking the Finance Minister to withdraw the advertisement immediately, Mr Gupta said the community would take up local and national level agitations if their demand were not met.
