ELECTRICITY workers have asked for the implementation of an agreement with the Power Ministry in May this year promising to review the Electricity Act 2003.
Under pressure from the Left parties, the Ministry had given a six months extension till December 2005 for unbundling State electricity boards (SEBs) and had agreed to review provisions relating to cross-subsidy and rural electrification in the Act. The Ministry had assured that it would address concerns regarding elimination of cross-subsidy, take steps to enhance the Centre's role in rural electrification and review provisions related to reorganisation of SEBs.
However, the Ministry has not initiated any action so far to fulfil the agreement, the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers convenor, Mr B.S. Meel, said today. He said electricity workers would stage a sit-in outside the Ministry on Thursday to press for their demands.
The representatives of the committee are also likely to meet the Power Minister, Mr P.M. Sayeed, he said, adding that they would decide the future course of action after the meeting.
