AP plea to Centre on Nagarjunasagar works

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 16

THE State Government has appealed to the Centre to support its plea for a Rs 3,000-crore World Bank loan for taking up modernisation and development works on the Nagarjunasagar project canals.

Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Minister for Major Irrigation, met Mr P. Chidambaram, the Union Finance Minister, on Tuesday here to discuss the issue.

Mr Lakshmaiah informed the Finance Minister that the 50-year-old project irrigated 23 lakh acres in five districts. "We need to take up modernisation and development works on the canals in order to reinforce the project," he said.

At the Lake View Guest House, the Minister made a presentation to Mr Chidambaram on the plan.

The Union Water Resources Ministry and Planning Commission both gave the go-ahead for the plan.

It, however, needed the approval of the Finance Ministry.

Mr Lakshmaiah asked the Finance Minister to look into the issue and forward the proposal to the World Bank.

A statement from the Government said that Mr Chidambaram responded positively.
